From expenses scandal to democratic
reform in 2010?
DEMREF 2010
is a simple yet powerful idea. At the General Election, voters will want to make an informed choice. They will want to know
where their candidates stand on reforming our political system following the expenses scandal.
There is no doubt
that public trust of politicians has hit rock bottom. Are our parliamentary hopefuls up to - or at least up for - the challenge
of restoring public confidence?
To find out, DEMREF 2010 has asked - and will continue to ask
- candidates to give their view on some of the big reform issues. Such openness about key policy questions is the very least
that ordinary voters should expect from aspiring national politicians.
Should the voting system be reformed or
should we stick with what we’ve got? Should the party whip be tamed by giving parliamentarians more free votes? Should
there be a mechanism to recall MPs involved in serious wrongdoing? And what about open primaries - are they a good or bad
idea?
Are the 2010 crop of candidates reform-minded or can we expect more of the same? Is politics safe in their
hands? Check out DEMREF 2010 now for a few clues…
